Underground Valleys Will Intensify the Shaking in the Next Big One
There’s a basin (a dip in crustal rocks) filled with 65 million years worth of sediments, beneath Cupertino. The basin could focus waves in a big quake.
But sometimes, a basin can act as a lens to focus shear waves — the most dangerous form of shaking in an earthquake. These waves shake in several directions — up and down and sideways — and wrench buildings apart.
