NASA Takes Aim at Comet
In a twist on the disaster movie “Deep Impact,” NASA will fire a 1,100 pound projectile at the comet Tempel 1. It will strike at 22,300 miles an hour, blasting a deep gouge in the rocky slushball. NASA hopes to learn about the structure of the early solar system (and I suppose how to stop Earth-crossing rocks.)
