New Distribution Explains Extreme Phenomena

[ via Slashdot ] You’ll recall that many phenomena are described with the Gaussian or ‘Bell Shaped’ distribution. The further you get from the center of the distribution, the less likey an event occurs. Now there is compelling evidence that many natural phenomena can be described by a asymmetric distribution which puts more weight into one of the tails, and therefore, higher likelihoods of extreme events. The distribution is being applied to phemomena like floods and biodiversity.
