Composer John Adams is conducting the San Francisco symphony this week. I’m going up to see tonight’s performance. CitySearch interviews him about composing and becoming a conductor in mid-career:
“I started the rehearsal of one of my pieces [Shaker Loops] and I discovered that they already knew it. The younger players in the orchestra had played the piece in college, and it was in their repertoire. We didn’t have to rehearse if [sic] for more than about 15 minutes because they knew it. Of course, it wasn’t like that 10 or 15 years ago. Now there are kids in the orchestra who are half my age.”
