Restored Cold War defense site in the Bay Area
[ via KTVU TV ] In the opening years of the Cold War, the US Army deployed the Nike-Hercules anti-aircraft missile in batteries around the country. The missile would had been used to hit an inbound squadron of bombers with a nuclear airburst atop them. ICBMs and treaties rendered the missile obsolete. A group of volunteers, many who worked on Nike-Hercules sites when they were active, have restored site SF-88 in the Marin headlands.
