Taiko Drumming

When I went to the San Francisco Taiko festival yesterday, I thought this style of ensemble drumming was an ancient Japanese form. It’s not. While the drums have been part of indigenous Japanese religious and community rituals for centuries, the modern Taiko style was developed in the 1950′s. It’s influenced by Jazz, drummers take solos and their bandmades will shout out encouragement to one another as they play. The drummers smile and grin as they pound out the beat, sometimes accompanied by flute, or even a bass. The founder of the modern style of Taiko plays a kit of them with all the panache of a Buddy Rich.
