It was worth losing sleep, getting caught in a traffic jam on a narrow mountain road in Santa Benito county, and laying on my back on gravel, to see the 2001 Leonids. Between 2:30 and 3:00am we were seeing multiple bright strikes across the sky at any moment. There was even an airburst that lit half the sky and left a smudge of green smoke hanging in the air for a couple of minutes.
