Deanna DeMatteo stuffed her History of the Las Vegas Strip Site full of trivia, history, photos and a few opinions (I don’t think she likes unions). To understand who owned which resort, how they are related, and what had been demolished to make way for the current mega-casino, this is the site.
She has some great stories stashed in the lists of who was headlining where and when.
[Little] Caesar’s [ on the current site of Paris, Las Vegas ] was a favorite haven for many degenerate gamblers in Las Vegas. Among the dealers who worked at Caesar’s, the place was referred to as “The Toilet”. Little Caesar’s was in fact a “dive” if there ever was one. One Saturday night, with its lone crap table filled to capacity and in the throes of a long run, one of the gentlemen players had to relieve himself. Faced with the dilemma, and not wanting to “jinx” the roll, this player relieved himself on the carpet. Hence – The Toilet.
You’ll have to scroll down a screen to get past all her September 11 stuff on the front page and down to the main content. However, since every casino on and off the strip was flashing flags and eagles on their jumbotrons, it’s in keeping with the mawkish patriotism of dubious sincerity which has always been a part of Vegas culture.
