Libertarians unclear on the concept

In today’s Chronicle, Rob Morse discusses the election year demand by ‘pro-family’ groups that political candidates promise special rights for heterosexuals. Morse is puzzled that some of the Libertarian candidates for state office signed the pledge to vote against gay marriages, civil unions, and domestic partnerships:

A few Democratic candidates for various offices have signed the Marriage Protection Pledge, as have four Libertarian candidates, of all things. I reached for my dictionary, which defines “libertarian” as “one who upholds the principles of absolute and unrestricted liberty.”

Mike McSpadden, Pete Bret, Bob New and Richard Senecal — you ought to be ashamed. You call yourselves Libertarians, and as such don’t have a chance of winning, so why did you sign this dumb pledge?

This isn’t new. Back in 1996, a Libertarian candidate for the state assembly took out an ad in the San Jose Metro where he stated he was in favor of the right of parents to mutilate their daughters’ genitalia. I guess he needed that all-important Taliban vote.

I guess that in some instances ‘Libertarian’ means you don’t want to pay taxes, but want to enforce your moral code on everyone else. At least they support the right to own guns. Because if they ever won office, we’d all need them for self-defense.
