Rufus Wainwright

J. and I went up to the City last night to see Rufus Wainwright play at the Filmore (such history!). He took the stage in 70s androgyne costume, a shiny, loose creme shirt open to the chest and a red scarf around his neck, and worked that Rock Diva G_D image for all it was worth.

He had a great band with him, including his sister Martha on backing vocals, and Teddy Johnson, his opening act, on guitar and vocals. Johnson’s a great singer/songwriter as well.

Damn, it was a great show. We called them back for three encores. On the last, Wainwright’s mom (the Wainwrights are a musical dynasty) came out and accompanied him on the piano while he sung “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. That elicited a culture clash moment where someone in the audience to our right started yelling something incomprehensible (I’m not sure if they were happy or angry to hear him riffing off of Gay culture icon Judy Garland). That let to us overhearing an angry confrontation in the lobby between the patron and a scruffy Filmore staffer that knocked some of the post show bliss out from under us.

He’s doing another show tonight. If tickets are sold out on Ticketmaster’s site, check Craig’s List.
