In a comment on Edd Dumbul’s O’Reilly WebLog, Mike Champion reminds us that 95% of what SOAP does can be done in a few lines of Perl or sh.
Update: In his WebLog, Mike clarifies: “For the record, I said that 95% of what ordinary people would do with SOAP (e.g. the infamous “Hello, Stockticker” example, the Google Web API) can be done more easily with HTTP GET.”
