Saturday Morning ConJose Notes

First, the 802.11b in the Fairmont’s lobby is working again, and it’s free! The lobby’s a civilized place to work and people-watch.

I finally met Cory Doctorow in person yesterday. He produced a freshly-minted copy of the O’Reilly Weblogging book from his backback. I was about to walk off with it when explained that it was the only copy he had. If you promise to contribute to the EFF, he has a “Fair Use has a Posse” decal for you.

Patrick Stewart did not fill the house last night. There are still fans who read out there. And in the juggling to make his appearance happen, there was a miscommunication which kibboshed Terry Bisson’s radio play. Some of the cast didn’t learn about the schedule change. But it’s a WorldCon and things happen. Hopefuly it’ll be rescheduled.

Stewart was gracious and entertaining. And his appearance has a backstory which confirms all those things Larry Lessig has been saying about the confusion of permissions and negotiations on which Hollywood thrives.

My panel on Weblogs and ‘traditional’ Fandom starts at 11:30am.
