Lisa Dewey: Twins-inspired Rock

So I’m writing in downtown San Jose on a wobbly table at the SoFA Bazzar. I gotta get an offline entry tool built.

I’m here to check out a local band, Lisa Dewey and The Lotus Life. This started when I went over to the Cocteau Twins’ website while I was writing documentation for a project, and I was jonesing for ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ (see previous entry).

Dewey has three albums out, two on her own label KitchenWhore, and I found about the band because of a mention on another Twin’s fansite/record label Dewdrops.

CD Baby sells her band’s albums, and has MP3/Real Audio samples. Her newer stuff isn’t as “Twinsey” in sound, but she and her band do a great job of putting up the big swirly sound.

Meanwhile, the opening act, a young Asian American woman in Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Diamonds’ dress from “The Seven Year Itch” singing showtunes along to a boombox has left and the band’s on stage now.

Aside from the wild shifts in volume at the sound board, this is good stuff.
