Local Media in Denial: Film at 11

Dorothea describes the Madison NBC affiliate’s coverage of the march against the Iraq war:

Channel 15 (WMTV) mentioned the protest briefly, no sound-bites, no numbers–and coupled this so-called “story” with another about a SINGLE pro-war protest somewhere on the WEST COAST. Er, relevance, people? And then they had the audacity to call the west-coast event “supporting our troops.”

WMTV, even though it’s changed owners a few times, has major denial issues. They are a conservative station in a liberal town.

One morning in the early 1990′s, when the “Missionaries to the Preborn” had gone on a rampage against women’s clinics in Milwaukee, the NBC national live feed showed an angry mob of bussed-in anti-abortion protesters trashing the yard of a Milwaukee gynecologist. WMTV decided, at that point, to cut in with the local weather forecast.

I didn’t see a mention of the ‘pro-war’ protest in the Mercury News (of which, I only really enjoy Dan Gilmore’s column, and Mr. Roadshow).
