At the end of an article in the paper Ha’aretz, covering the Palestinian Authorities’ negotiations with Haamas over a cease fire, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Abbas is quoted concerning his earlier meeting with President Bush:
According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush said: “God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.”
I saw this in Tom Dispatch, and it’s getting traction in the blogosphere.
Now you can take this as evidence that “He’s Mad!” But I’m wondering if this is some sort of horrible mistake in translation; weird mappings of coloquial phrases between English, Arabic and Hebrew; or some joker at the Ha’aretz copy desk ran s/Wolfowitz/God/ over the text in the publishing system.
