Update: note that:
- The custom style below no longer works for LJ’s other than mine.
- Atom 0.3 has been deprecated.
- I do not plan to fix the bug.
Thanks to Kim Slawson for letting me know about the custom style bug.
I’ve wasted a sunny afternoon working on a Atom 0.3 friends feed from Live Journal:
http://www.livejournal.com/customview.cgi?user=[username]&styleid=379504
This is not the same as the Atom feed you can get for a LJ user at: http://www.livejournal.com/users/[username]/data/atom.
This feed is username’s LJ friend’s recent, public posts. If you’re not familiar with Live Journal, a user can select other users as ‘friends’. It’s probably the most common way to read Live Journal.
Examples:
http://www.livejournal.com/customview.cgi?user=jwz&styleid=379504JWZ’s Friendshttp://www.livejournal.com/customview.cgi?user=whumpdotcom&styleid=379504My Friends
Limitations:
- The LJ user in [username] must be a paid user. ‘Free’ users will return a HTML error message.
- This was built using the deprecated S1 style builder. S2 support may be forthcoming as soon as I can study up on it.
- Fragility: In order to support display in User Agents, I took the post contents as escaped HTML. However, if a user’s friend types <foo> instead of <foo> when editing their post, this throws an error on feedvalidator.org
Many of my friends from the past 20-odd years have all stumbled on to LJ (skewing against the youthful age distribution) and we’re using it as our party line.
