Shaun of the Dead

So my friends in the UK are raving about Shaun of the Dead a comedy in which a group of people at a pub have to defend themselves from a zombie attack. Something about it makes me think that much of the humor is going to be topical, so what bits of recent British pop culture do I need to study in order to get the jokes?
