The US Senate Democrats put together a web tool that’ll calculate what they think the effect of Bush’s Social Security plan would be on your benefits.
According to it, mine would fall 17%.
Now, modulo the question of privatizing Social Security, I think the tool’s a great example of web activism. Go to the page, enter your annual salary and birth year, and you see what they think is wrong with the GOP plan.
In addition, it’s JavaScript, so you can hand someone a zipped set of files to put on their server. No server-side application to install. The Democrats have the calculator up on several Senator’s sites.
As for the Bush plan, I’m puzzled by it. Rather than all the hype about ‘private’ accounts, if you think you can do better than a bond, then just move part of the funds into other instruments instead of giving everyone a private account. I guess the brokers like the idea.
