Cyn and I went up to the City today to see a “battle of the surf bands show” at the Hotel Utah. We brought back a stack of CDs from the selection the bands were selling. One of them, Pollo Del Mar’s Year of the Rooster, had a cover of Frank Zappa’s jazz-rock anthem Peaches en Regalia.
Cyn’s not familiar with Zappa’s non-novelty stuff, so I jumped onto eMusic to see if they had the original. They did, as well as a cover by Joe Goldmark. Hadn’t heard of him, but worth taking a flyer.
Goldmark plays pedal steel guitar, and does a great cover of the Zappa standard, replacing the buzzy arpeggios with twang.
He plays with the Ten Gallon Cats for gigs in San Francisco, so keep an eye out for dates they’re playing.
