Product Placement On Tour

Teresa’s discussion of the Warner Independent/Six Apart cock-up over the fake Live Journal members praising The Science of Sleep reminds me of a related annoyance.

Sunday afternoon, Cynthia treated her mother and I to a matinee of the touring company of the revival of Sweet Charity that was finishing its run in San José. The novelty being that Molly Ringwald, star of many films about suburban Chicago in the 1980’s, was playing the title role. Cyn and I are, of course, products of the early 1980’s as well.

During the scene following The Rich Man’s Frug, a waiter asks Vidal (hyperglam Italian film star) if he’ll have another scotch. Vidal answers, “no, I’ll have a $NAME-OF-HIGH-END-TEQUILA.” That high end tequila has an ad on the back of the program book. Huh?

Later, during the Church of the Rhythm of Life scene, the cultists dance on boxes: boxes of $NAME-OF-HIGH-END-TEQUILA. Jeesh. How tacky and blatant, rewriting someone’s words to sell designer tequila.

Speaking of tacky uses of someone else’s image to make a point:

Colbert's Putting You On Notice.

Thanks, Sivacracy.
