From Southern Gothic to Realism via New York

I was listening to Radio Paradise tonight, to take the sting out of the five to nil drubbing that the Sharks received at the hands of the Ducks, and they played Pretty Persuasion. That’s the first time I’d heard the song in years, and it reconfirmed Reckoning as my favorite R.E.M. album.

I looked up the album on Wikipedia, and noticed a sidebar with a pointer to Robert Christgau’s review (he gives it a B+)

(The Voice firing Christgau? Insane. Now that New Times owns the Voice you’ll be able to punch a hole in it like any old shambling dried-up, media mummy.)

Anyway, some digging about Christgau’s encyclopedic website turns up some great stuff, like a magic URL that pulls up a random dozen album’s he’s rated at A or better. His one paragraph capsule reviews are fun reading.

And to my final point. I’ve been touting Amy Rigby on this weblog for ages (a, b, c, and this review of Diary of a Mod Housewife from Salon was what got me started), so I was curious about what Christgau thinks of her music. He likes it. So there you go. Tower Record’s dutch auction fire sale’s reached the 40 to 60% off point.
