Ekranoplan!

Holy smokes, the Soviets really did build the ekranoplan Charlie Stross described in Missile Gap. You can see one in dry dock on Google.

    I seem to remember watching some documentary some years back where they faatured some footage of this thing in operation. Pretty neat stuff!

    Yeah, a little searching around on “ekranoplan” in the usual places will give not only video of the old Russian beasts (and apparently there were several different designs), but some interesting modern creatures too, including a 244′ $95M yacht thingie that’s apparently under active construction!

    Okay, now I know what I want when I strike it big. I wonder if Bentley has the blueprints for the version of the Ares with the anti-ship missiles?

    Wow! This is pure ‘Thunderbirds Are Go!’ and given this beastie was created at the same time the original series aired, maybe Gerry Anderson was really working for the Russkies??!
