It’s 2007 and some folks still don’t get diversity? I guess we’ll have to go ’round again. Last year, after Woolfcamp, Liz Henry wrote on why diversity’s important. It’s still pertinent. I appreciated Rafe’s rule of thumb for joining guilds in online role playing games.
We’ll try to “Raise more Hell,” but now I’m going to cry.
Debbie Notkin watches some TV and comes back stunned: [T]hose of you who are watching TV and still staying positive about your bodies? You’re heroes.
Via Cynthia, here’s a case of how “know your customer” laws and a bank’s indifference can derail a small business. Blue Moon Fiber Arts, a small West Cost company, runs a ‘sock club’ service: a yarn of the month club for knitters who want to work with cool, speciality yarns. The sock club grew popular. [...]
Amy Rigby’s one of the best musicians you haven’t heard, and she has a recent compilation out that’s a great introduction to her music. Rigby writes about what it’s like to be single, middle aged, and raising a kid. Her song The Good Girls is a thumping lament about the women who work two full-time [...]
Liz Henry found a photo of a young Alice Bradley (who would later write under the pen name James Tiptree, Jr.) taken in an art class at the University of Chicago’s Lab School.
Matt, Mena, stop using your moms as the example of the naive weblog user. Moms and grandmothers are blogging already. And if my Mom started blogging, then that’d be damn strange since she died 8 years ago. Additional Tags: 2006, wordcamp
A couple of long days (running from 8am to 11pm) at the San Jose Hyatt (which looks a bit like the late, lamented Hyatt Rickey’s) for Blogher. Met many people, and a non-exhaustive list would include: Elizabeth Perry She’s a technologist in Pittsburgh, a heavy duty city for technology (CMU, and the steel mills that [...]
Many of the men here at Blogher are technology veterans, and we have knowledge to share. However, this is also a space for women to find their voices, share their expertise, and build their confidence. I know there’s an urge to contribute in the sessions, but let me suggest that you hold your comments for [...]
Cyn and I are going to Blogher in San José this Friday and Saturday. Friday is the technical track, and I’m looking forward to Susan Kitchen’s talk on podcasting. Saturday’s the social/practice track. Don’t worry Grace, you’ll run circles around Huffington at the keynote. My plan for the conference is to listen and learn. And [...]
Joss Whedon accepting an award from Equality Now: Interviewer: Why do you write strong women characters? Joss: Why aren’t you asking those other 100 writers why they aren’t? One answer he missed: he has had great writers on his team who also write strong women characters! By the way, the Browncoats are sponsoring worldwide screenings [...]
My gaming group’s starting up an Amber diceless campaign. It’s set in a Nazi-occupied England, and the player characters are part of the The Resistance. John Kim found an article on how the real Nazi’s turned contortions to keep Shakespeare off their banned books register. An interview with writer Barbara Ehrenreich, who has just started [...]
Katha Pollitt on opposition to the HPV vaccine: Faced with a choice between sex and death, they choose death every time.
WisCon 30′s over. Between managing the computer volunteers, and being on five panels, I never had a chance to write a substantial post, and our flight from Madison to Minneapolis was canceled Tuesday night because of a fault on the aircraft. Some Highlights: Laura Quilter ran informal ‘how to wiki’ workshops every morning in the [...]
