Retaining parity with Sanrio in the cute, copyrighted character arms race

[ via Allen Baki ] Bikini Kat, the Smart Sassy Stylish Pink Gigantic Cat, is the creation of San Francisco artist Flower Frankenstein. You can make your own Bikini Kat portable icon from the directions on the site, but don’t steal, or Flower’s cute, little cartoon IP attorneys will smack you down.

Moonshadow (with apologies to Cat Stevens)

[ via Anton Sherwood ] Watch the Moon’s shadow pass over Africa in an animated GIF movie made from images taken from a European weather bird during a 2001 eclipse of the Sun.

Vampire Population Ecology

[ via Anonymous Clare ] Okay Buffy fans: “So how big does a town have to be to support Sunnydale’s apparently limitless supply of vampires?”
I’m waiting for the paper on ‘branes and hell dimensions.

Tom Bombadil meets Brian Wilson

Chad considers what might happen if Wilson and Bombadil smoked some good pipeweed and collaborated.
Well Shadows block the sunshine, and the girls all get so pale,
I dig their black black clothes, and their invisible noses,
and their ghostly ghostly wail.

Arwen and Éowyn called to say they are “hurt, and slighted.”

Whimsy Cards

John Kim proposed using Whimsy Cards in our current RPG campaign. These are cards with plot devices printed on them. The player characters receive one each at the start of a session and can play them on one another to make things more interesting.
Hum, so what happens when you combine them with the Seattle Grimmeldeck?

1000 blank white cards

[ cited everywhere ] I like the idea of 1KBWC. Sounds like a great improv exercise. I looked at the Seattle deck and was not surprise to see that Gwen Harris, step-daughter of game maven and SF fan Andy P. Hooper was involved.
In researching sources of blank cards for another project, I learned at Gamescape [...]

Abyssynian Whump

[ via the referer logs ] As a rule I ignore the ‘what X are you quizes”, but I saw this one for which breed of cat you are and couldn’t resist.

I’m pleased with the result, though my cat Elby isn’t going to be happy.

15 Seconds of Fame: San Francisco Version

Uh, who does fact checking at the Chronicle? Amos Glick’s claim to fame isn’t just that he’s the “worlds fastest banana eater” and composer of ribald songs, he’s part of the World Famous San Francisco Mime Troupe, who I go see every year on July 4th at Mission Dolores Park.
Cute middle eastern dancer though. Woot. [...]

CoolNeon

At a party tonight, there was a young woman wearing a tiara made of a thin, glowing, blue wire. I asked where she found it, and learned she had made it out of CoolNeon wire. It’s a tungsten coated wire, coated in PVC, which glows when you run power through it. It’s neat stuff, [...]

Lightwave and iMacs go well together on the iBeach…

[ via Michael Rawdon ] Don’t challenge an iMac to a game of limbo unless you’re extremely flexible. [ QuickTime, duh! ]

Urban Iditarod

Brian Sobolak, an unindicted co-conspirator of the Squid that Laughs, passes along a pointer to the Urban Iditarod:
In the Alaskan Iditarod, more than sixty dog sled teams race across the frozen tundra from Anchorage to Nome. In our urban version, teams of “dogs” lead by a musher will pull their sleds (shopping carts) through some [...]

Deep Sky Weblogs

From the referrer logs: a page with an image map. The image is a field of distant galaxies. Each galaxy is a link to a weblog. Cool.

A Dictionary of Units of Measurement

A collection of units of measure: archaic, foriegn, trade, and scientific.

I do not know if it inspired the new iMac — it is still a great little flim

Okay, everyone has been comparing the new iMac to Pixar’s mascot. Fine, but when I first saw Luxo Jr. in the late 1980’s, I thought it was the funniest thing I’d seen in years. It still is. [ Quicktime ]

A Visit to Middle Earth in the 19th Century

In a glorious piece of whimsey, a writer creates the travelogue of three Englishmen journeying from the Grey Havens to Rivendell, with an Uruk Hai as their guide in Middle Earth long after the events of the Lord of the Rings.
