Kittens Grow Up Fast

I brought the kittens home back in July. I’ve gone through many bags of kitten food, doses of flea goop, and jugs of litter. Now they are nearly cats.

Arrr…

I’m still here. Just digging out of backlog. I’m not ready to commit to that organizational Aktins stuff yet, but I did buy the book.
Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day, and don’t let any scurvy dogs give you the black card.

Geek Dinner

Last Friday was the Geek Dinner in Mountain View.
Andy Freeman, Cynthia Gonsalves, myself, Vivian and Bill Lazar, and Dan Lyke (who came all the way down from the North Freakin’ Bay) enjoyed a lovely meal at Cafe Yulong.
Dan’s suggesting another South Bay get together, so if you know of another group-friendly place, let him know.

FeedBurner’s Meta Feeds

[ via Rafe ] FeedBurner now lets you merge your photo feed from Flickr and your del.icio.us linkstream with an XML syndication feed.
This is something I’ve wanted to sit down and write some XSLT for.
So I’ve merged Atomic Kittens, del.icio.us/whump with my full-text Atom feed: creating a shambling RSS 2.0 meta feed.
What’s not to like:

The Non-tridecaphobic Geek Dinner: Mountain View, August 13th

It’s been awhile since Jeremy Zawodny
organized a Geek Dinner. Bill Lazar suggested throwing one in Mountain View before the end of Summer.
You’re invited to join Bill and I at Cafe Yulong, on Dana Street between Hope and Castro, at 7pm on Friday, August 13th (yeah, yeah, we’re not tridecaphobic.)
To RSVP, send a trackback to [...]

Your Friday Cat Blogging on Monday Morning

I brought home two three-month-old kittens July 4th weekend.
Yuki’s the calico, ‘Tomi is the black.
They are, of course, perfect and cute; even when tearing about my apartment in the wee hours.

Elby Cat, 1992-2004

I’ll miss her sleeping between my feet nearly every night.

4,000

This is the 4,000th post to this weblog.
I’m in the Convention Suite on the 6th floor of the Concourse Hotel at WisCon 28, listening to Cynthia telling the story of how one of Lois Bujold’s anthologies (with Miles’ wedding) was originally published in Croatian.
And a shortlist of Science Fiction Romance because that’s what folks are [...]

Origin Stories

Costas wonders where “whump” comes from.
He found wump.com, who provides an origin for his nickname.
Mine’s simple, when I was on Peacenet back in the early 1990’s, the system assigned me the user ID and email address “whump”: William Humphries. The moniker stuck with me from then on.

Digital Colophon

I planned to talk about note taking software, but the scope expanded following James Tauber’s call to action on reading Mark Pilgrim’s Digital Colophon:

OS: Mac OS 10.3
Unix with a usable GUI. Hell yeah.

Editor: BBEdit
If I worked on Windows, my editor would be emacs. But I’m not. It magically colors my syntax, validates HTML markup, searches [...]

Sorry Yahoo!

I looked through logs and discovered that the Yahoo! bot was getting lost. It was looking for /morelikethis instead of /moreLikeThis and getting sent to the 404 error page. That’s not good. I’ve updated my rewrite rules so that you don’t have to worry about the camel casing. I know that mixed case URLs are [...]

40 Years

Sunday I turned 40. That’ll take some getting used to.
The photo above is from sometime in 1964. That’s Mom, Jeanne Marie, who we miss, on the left. That’s Dad, George W., holding me. He was 41 when that photo was made.
I didn’t find that photo until a couple of years after Mom died. It turned [...]

Macworld SF

I’ll be at Macworld tomorrow checking out the exhibit halls. Email or look for whump on iChat if you want to meet up for lunch and or coffee.
