Happy Holidays

I’m off to geologically quiet Dallas to visit family. I’ll be back Friday. Posting will be sporadic, if at all. Thanks to my friends, readers, and syndicators; and my best wishes for the Holidays.

Weblog Design Update

Yes, a site design update. Thanks to Floatutorial for the CSS help.
Update: Anita Rowland alerted me to some IE6 problems. I hope I’ve got those fixed now.

Expat Selection

From Everything Burns:
For whatever reason (say an opressive regime has taken over your country), you find that you have to cut and run, leaving most everything behind to live on the lam for a while. After packing all the essentials (You packed a flashlight, right? Double check), you find that you have room for 7 [...]

Last of the Titans, Family History

Update: It launched.
If systems problems can be solved, the last of the Titan II boosters will launch from Vandenberg AFB this weekend. My Dad worked on the Titan II, and my eldest sister’s late husband built them at Martin’s plant in Denver.
My sister has a photo of her husband standing on a platform next to [...]

Spam from whump.com

This afternoon I’ve received a large number of bounces for spam. The spam has a forged return address header in this domain. If you received such a spam, this was not sent from this domain. The sender appears to be a machine attached to a Comcast cable modem. Comcast has been contacted. It would be [...]

We’ve Moved

Okay, the relocation to the new server is done. Let me know if you run across anything broken.

System Upgrades

whump.com is moving servers in the next week. There may be downtime.

Some Technical Difficulties, or Bill broke the parser…

Well, back in the start of this whole weblog business, I didn’t pay the attention to well-formedness as I should had. Therefore, since this site’s doctype is strict XHTML, if you request a category like, “XML”, and you’re on Safari or a Gekko based browser, you’ll get an error message.
I’ll be fixing those broken entries [...]

First Strawberry

The first berry from the strawberry bush in my balcony planter was ready for picking today. It was juicy, but not very sweet.

The New More Like This

After nearly five years, I’ve redesigned the home brew blog software. It’s still using PHP and MySQL. I’m using honest to Ghu templates with PHP Smarty. I’ve also wired-in trackback, which means I’m now caught up to mid-2002 technology.
Thanks to Phillip, Anita, and Morbus for their feedback.

London, May 2003

Photos from days one and two in London

London, May 2003

I’ll be in London from May 2nd to May 5th, and staying in the Russell Square area. If you’re in the area and want to meet for lunch, dinner or play native guide for an hour or two, let me know. If you’re willing to let an ugly American use a closed access point, let [...]

Now What?

SciFi Channel played their production of the second two books in Frank Herbert’s Dune novels this week. I don’t watch TV news, but I watch SciFi channel, so the start of that miniseries reminded me of the current crusade: good intentions, usurping corrupt Padishaw Emperor, restoring oppressed peoples to former glory, but then there’s the [...]

In which YHOS engages in a healthy Nordic lifestyle

Fine, you hipsters, go to Austin, take your photo in the mirror of Bruce’s bathroom, have your date hit on by the lead singer of a band that was big in the 1980s.
I’m going skiing. (Cue the yodelling soundtrack occasionally used on Ren and Stimpy)
The folks at the OSCOM sprint in Zurich next week plan [...]

Timeout for Xmas Baking

Aside from running up to the City last night to see Los Lobos at the Filmore, I’ve been busy baking cookies to send to the family for Christmas.
I made several dozen snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies which will go into tomorrow’s mail.
