I didn’t get around to making a holiday postcard this year, my apologies.

In the past week I accepted a new job, friends had a beautiful baby daughter, and another learned her brother has cancer. This time of year amplifies joy and sorrow.

I wish all of you happy holidays, whichever ones you may keep this season. May your journeys be safe, your family civil, and the TSA non-draconian if you’re flying.

Check out R Todd King’s photos of the Harbin Snow and Ice Festival. Harbin’s a city in far Northeastern China. Apparently it’s below freezing almost half the year, and below zero Fahrenheit most of the winter. The ice palaces they build are amazing.

The folks at the OSCOM sprint in Zurich next week plan to go snowshoeing afterwards. And the developers of TYPO 3 have an annual snowboarding gathering. So I’m saying that this winter sports business is a fine and proper thing for a web logger to do. But if you’re in Austin, hoist a bottle of Bock for me, will ya?

This is a well done how-to on building igloos and snow caves. The illustrations are clever, and not just decoration, they compliment the text. The hints and asides reveal the author has learned from experience: “…if you don’t want to have to crawl into popsicle pants in the morning, remember to put your dry pair of jeans in your sleeping bag with you at night. They’ll stay warm with you in your sleeping bag and you can put them back on in the morning without screaming while you do the defrost dance.”

In the shadow of an abandoned Military complex at Pillar Point, north of Half Moon Bay, CA, where big radar dishes once tracked KH-111 spy birds boosting out of Vandenberg AFB, lies Mavericks. This small spot of Pacific coastline provides the largest rideable cold water waves in surfing.

The world’s best riders are on alert during the Winter storm season. When the surges hit, they will be summoned to the contest dubbed “the men who ride mountains.” You can be put on an email notification list so you can drive up and over Hwy 92 from the Valley and witness the primoridal plot: person vs. Nature

Snow in Silicon Valley

Chris Gulker has some amazing photos taken up in the hills above Palo Alto during the snow we got on the 20th. Much more impressive than the flakes I saw drifting past the hummingbird feeder at my place on the Cupertino-Los Altos border.
