His internal data format abstracts away from RSS and Atom so that when he displays a feed, he’s only manipulating Cocoa objects.

He says, this is ‘beginning programmer stuff,’ but it’s a powerful technique.

At my old, defunct, company, 2Roam, we never went from HTML to WML directly. We took a cleaned up XHTML version of the page we wanted to display and converted to our own RML markup that the server cached, and from there we’d generate WML optimized for the device, carrier and gateway.

If you click on the 2Roam links in that article, you go to Air2Web, who bought our technology after 2Roam went the way of most startups.

For lack of anything better, I’m trying the LG VX6100 phone. It has a horrid little camera, no Bluetooth (but nothing on Verizon does,) a decent voice mode, and a speaker.

I can also send images to and from the phone. However Verizon charges $0.25 per instance to do this. That’s an outrageous rate for me as I wanted to use Flickr as an image dump. I’ve already spent $5.00 on pushing images back and forth from the phone. I’ll have to switch to Bitpim to move data back and forth if I keep the phone.

Cynthia emailed my phone a MIDI file she wanted me to use as her ringtone, I couldn’t save the file, even though the phone lists save sound as an option. A call to Verizon’s technical support confirmed this.

Verizon’s great if all you want is wireless voice service. They have a reliable network and good packages. But if you want to do more with your phone, you’ll want to look at other carriers.

Russell Beattie put up a collage of all the mobile phones currently available in the US. As of today, Verizon will sell me a new phone at a discount. So which one to pick? I want:

Camera

Because I love Flickr. The more megapixels, the better.

Battery Life

I want a fuel cell, but that’s not coming for awhile.

Bluetooth

And it better play nice with iSync.

Unfortunately, I can’t get Bluetooth because Verizon doesn’t believe in Bluetooth, and wants you to buy clumsy USB cables (that don’t work with the Mac) to synch your phone with your computer.

I could switch carriers, but I’d lose the free calls to Cynthia’s phone, and Verizon’s non-crappy coverage in the Bay Area.

The new version of the server software now plays all the tracks I had ripped in AAC format (which was almost all my Yoko Kanno) so I now can listen to my Cowboy Bebop soundtracks without reripping them.

Installing the server software is easy; configuring the player is more tedious than it needs to be (you use the remote instead of a GUI.) But the effort is worth it.

But PGE Field has Comcast cable as an official sponsor, so the park’s management has become grumpy. I guess they’re upset that Portland’s WiFi hobbyists have foreclosed the opportunity for PGE Field to lose money selling WiFi connections at the park.

The writer also appears to think that only Comcast sells broadband, as they whinge about violations of Comcast’s TOS prohibiting connection sharing; while Moonlight Staffing, the company providing the free hot-spot, buys its connection from a firm that doesn’t ban connection sharing.

I’ve toyed with buying Vonage service, and bringing the box with me when I travel so I can make unlimited calls and receive incoming calls when in a hotel room or anywhere I can bridge to a wired to Wi-Fi connection.

However, since my wireless plan already gives me nationwide roaming, that will probably be redundant, since the presense of high-speed connections and major wireless carrier networks tend to coincide.
