Hey Madison bloggers, I want to do a BoF at WisCon. Someone suggest a place downtown. Link
Odyssey Con is only in it’s second year, but it’s put together a great program. Madison fandom is smart. Even their media conventions are smart. My friends Tom and Jerome do great work, so if you’re in the area, go!.
Jim Higgins of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel pens new lyrics to Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut” from the point of view of el Presidente as he choked on that pretzel. Panic button reaching, flailing finger Craving one humongous brandy stinger No spores in here, not one iota Hold on! This came from South Dakota! Meanwhile, the UK [...]
[ via Oliver Willis ] Instead of worrying about Green Bay fans’ choice of headgear, Superdome officials should keep a sharp eye open for Bruce Dern. Come on, no daughter or son of America’s Dairyland is going to lower themselves to be in the employ of Islamic Facsists.
Madison-based Cartoonist John Kovalic’s empire continues to grow. Interactive Week carries a color Dork Tower strip on the inside back page.

Back in the early 90′s when I was a graduate student at Wisconsin, an unusual transformation was taking place. GOP Governor Tommy Thompson was listening to the faculty at the UW, and helped to change welfare reform in Wisconsin from a Conservative wet dream of retribution into a plan to help the poor and working [...]
My graduate school alma mater, The University of Wisconsin, was outed for the matter of doctoring a photo in an brochure touting ethnic diversity at UW. The publications department cut and pasted an image of an African-American student taken in 1994 into one taken of a crowd of white students at a football game in [...]
San Francisco writer Pat Murphy and her pals brought a blimp to WisCon.
It was brought to my attention that some of the illustrations in the site about The Gobbler I linked yesterday were taken from James Lileks essay on the topic. So, in the interests of completeness, here is Lileks on the prestressed concrete wonder of Southeastern Wisconsin.
Sitting on a low ridge, off the Interstate highway between Madison and Milwaukee, sits the prestressed concrete, Jet-age wonder known as the Gobbler. When I was in Wisconsin, I passed it several times a year, on the way to catch a flight out of Milwaukee, visiting a friend, or going to Summerfest. I never ate [...]
It’s not just that the Badgers come to LA to lay waste to the Pac10. They’ve been coming to Hollywood as well. The UW provides this list of worthwhile films with UW Madison connections. Did you know that Michael Mann (“Miami Vice”, “The Insider”) was an alumni?
Death and derrangement were part of the American frontier. The book Wisconsin Death Trip documents how settlers in Wisconsin transformed private tragedy into public spectacle.
My Father-In-Law put together a major surprise for my wife’s mom on their 41st wedding anniversary. In fact, it merited the attention of one of Madison’s newspapers. Dave, we should get Gates and Jobs to do this for all developers!
Three movies with settings in Wisconsin opened this weekend. NPR interviewed Michael Feldman, Madison radio fixture (WHA, WORT,) about the phenomena. He said Madison was more interested in the big game against Iowa State for the Big Ten Championship. [ Real Audio ]
