I installed the experimental Atom Publishing Protocol Server in in my local WordPress test install.
Posted a entry using curl to talk to WordPress.
Used hAtom2Atom.xsl to grab the embedded hAtom from the Sandbox themed blog.

During all this recent excitement about using hAtom to generate feeds, I’d forgotten that I wrote about the concept nearly three years ago when I was getting ready to talk about syndication at Seybold SF.

While providing a purpose-built (ahem, Atom) feed remains the best answer, hAtom offers two things we didn’t have three years ago:

A consistent content model: you don’t have to analyze the markup and write a custom XSLT transform (such as in my example using The Nation, or the feed for The Infinite Matrix.)
A widely deployed model: It appears that Sandbox, a theme with hAtom support, will become the default template for WordPress.

I hung out in the back of the hall at Wordcamp, adding hAtom support to the default WordPress theme.

I showed my work to Bill Lazar, who told me that Scott Allan Wallick’s new theme, Sandbox, available for WordPress.com blogs, has hAtom baked in.

Well, that makes my work, Strangelove, v0.1, superfluous.

You can use Chris Casciano’s script for Net News Wire to read a Sandbox themed blog as Atom, or pipe it through Luke Arno’s hatom2atom proxy.

If you’re comfortable with editing PHP, open themes/sandbox/header.php, and add the following to the head section:

This will use Luke Arno’s proxy to generate an Atom 1.0 feed by parsing the hAtom format in the page. Strangelove does that out of the box.

If you’re running PHP 5 with libxslt support, you can run Chris’ filter script instead of the remote proxy.

At the Âµformats session, where you see me doing my Nikita Khrushchev imitation, I talked about this. Thanks to Tantek for inviting Slashchick and me up to talk about our hacks.

Slashchick modified the Countdown plugin to publish events in the hCalendar format, so that you can extract them from a blog page into your calendar.

A couple of weeks ago, Elliot Rusty Harold asked why don’t we embed XML vocabularies in XHTML instead of using microformats. He gave the example of his conference calendar. The events are in a custom XML format embedded in XHTML, and uses an XSLT processing instruction to convert it all to XHTML for display in post-IE5 web browsers.
I was wondering why I don’t see more examples of that technique in the wild, when Les Orchard discovered that Blizzard rewrites the World of Warcraft front page on the fly using an XSLT processing instruction. Ahah! An XSLT app seen by millions of users.
Todd Ditchendorf ~~is working on~~ released a Cocoa XSLT processor ‘palate’ that works with XML in your favorite Mac text editor.
Scott Reynen found an XSLT transform that converts XML into JSON. That’d be a useful proxy for REST-style services where you need to import XML across domains.
In response to my grumbling about the lack of Atom 1.0 support (without patches) in WordPress, Tantek Ã‡elik reminded me that hAtom is an alternative, and Chris Casciano’s experimenting with it.

Subscribing To hAtom Feeds With NetNewsWire

hAtom‘s not useful until you have a way to get from a blog’s summary page to an Atom feed. Chris Casciano wrote an AppleScript wrapping xsltproc that reads an hAtom page, applies the hAtom2Atom.xsl transform, and hands the result back to NetNewsWire.

Note: Scott Reynen points out that the script doesn’t work with NNW 2.1 beta.

The Old Ones Migrate

Jeffrey Zeldman moved his “daily report” from hand-edited markup to WordPress. Another of the class of 1998 who’ve moved from handcoded or homebrew to one of the major blogging tools.

Rafe migrated his homebrew system to Movable Type last year.
Rebecca Blood switched from hand-edited markup to Movable Type at the start of 2006.
I don’t know when Pete switched RasterWeb to WordPress.
I switched to WordPress last month.
I think Dori and Tom were one of the first from our cadre to use Moveable Type.

The current homebrew bloggers are the alpha geeks from the second and third generation of bloggers. Folks such as Sam Ruby, Tim Bray, Norm Walsh, Kate Rhodes, and several of the Atom hackers.

By the way, I’ve got a copy of Movable Type running in parallel with WordPress (it’s easy to copy from one blog to another in MarsEdit,) so another switch may be in the offing.

While I’m on the topic of migrating your blog, Todd Ditchendorf has a nice solution: dump your current MySQL tables to XML, and use XSLT to transform them into a target import format.
